WINTERING WILDLIFE Conservation Initiative
Wildlife are extra vulnerable in winter and spring when their energy demands are high, temperatures are low, and food is scarce but there’s a lot we can do to avoid or minimize disturbance. These include simple actions like moving slowly and quietly when traveling near wildlife, not approaching wildlife or following their tracks, and leashing your dog if you see wildlife or think animals may be nearby.
The Wintering Wildlife Conservation Initiative has begun a campaign to help spread the word about protecting wildlife in the wintertime.
ALSO, If you have fences on your property that are not currently retaining livestock, consider leaving gates open for the winter or laying down sections of the fence to make it easier for wildlife to cross.
Do NOT Shed Hunt during the winter. Shed hunting is legal and does not cost a thing, but it is PROHIBITED on public lands west of I-25 (including Grand and Summit Counties) from January 1st thru April 30th each year. Though restrictions do not affect private lands, landowners should limit shed hunting when big game are present.
